- John Spencer, who played The West Wing's Leo McGarry, has died aged 58 God, what terrible news. I'm astonished that he was only 58 - he looked ten years older at least. It turns out that he was younger than my stepfather.

And he was three years younger than both my mother and father. I'm starting to feel old; mortal.
I've been watching Season 1 back recently. Seeing episodes where the team rallies behind Leo suddenly gained an extra poignancy.

That's what I thought too when I saw his age in the obit; he looked far older than 58. But then he did have a history of alcoholism in his past which might account for that.
Also, the current series on E4 (a repeat for Americans or the Irish) with Leo recovering from his heart attack takes on somewhat of a tragic irony now.
