it's not just the peculiarly paranoid "VC" market, it's also very very much driven by English (sub)cultures.
e.g., Holographic 3D Desktop Monitors based on LCD panels and costing US$20-50 more than an equivalent LCD monitor: rather than turn it into commercial reality, they chose to rip me off and then self-destruct. (link goes to (old) slashdot) This let them feel more true to themselves.
