- Just over a week ago Techcrunch UK launched keeping track of the tremulous UK start-up scene I hear really good things about Techcrunch UK, but haven't yet been keeping much track of it. Nice to see that I get a mention though.

it's not just the peculiarly paranoid "VC" market, it's also very very much driven by English (sub)cultures.
e.g., Holographic 3D Desktop Monitors based on LCD panels and costing US$20-50 more than an equivalent LCD monitor: rather than turn it into commercial reality, they chose to rip me off and then self-destruct. (link goes to (old) slashdot)
This let them feel more true to themselves.
