If you want to free up about 10+Gb off your Mac and don't user GarageBand or iMovie, get rid of all the preloaded audio and video samples. They are massive. Individually they are small enough files that they don't turn up as biggest files on your system.
The app that finally clued me is was Disk Inventory X which give a spacial view of the type of files that are taking up the most space
