Microlith [Version 1.0]
The Microlith project is an experiment that fuses several stables of the web together into one gestalt entity that (hopefully) is greater than the sum of its parts.
Everyone is familiar with pop-up adverts. You go to a site, a window appears advertising a product that you aren't in the slightest bit interested in. You shut down the window immediately and then it relaunches, and again and again as you wander through the pages. Unbelievably annoying. But what if the pop-up did not contain an advert, but some kind of entertainment content? What if instead of the piece of PR copy, there was a webtoy or a piece of useful information? Perhaps in that case the pop-up would not be a nuisance, but a boon?
There's another concept that has had it's impact on the net. Web-rings were invented so that people with similar interests could be found through some form of 'horizontal' association. If you find any one of the infinite Noah Wyle pages, then you will easily be able to find your way to any of the others.
Microlith combines all these elements. If you like this site and wish to have a piece of its content on your site, then drop me a line and I will send you some code. Add this to your website, and when your page loads, Microlith will launch itself. In exchange for putting the page on your site, I will add the name of your site to the "members" section of Microlith and on this page on Barbelith, which in turn means that it will act as a webring for those of similar interests.
And the wonderful thing about this is the content can be updated continually - new ideas can be added, without any work on your part - unless of course you want to get involved!
So far the content includes:
- Xenolith (a sample of my daily weblog)
- Dice Man (a random decision-making device)
- The Bomb (a random self-refreshing Invisibles quote)
