After a three-year break, Brightons Essential Festival returns to the site where it was conceived (originally as an end-of-term party). Although its still based on seperate themed days, its come some way - and several extra arenas - since those humble beginnings...
ATMOSPHERE:
Essentials Dance alldayer should kick things off in heady style, before the more traditionally mellow feel of the Roots Day (although this year, masses of hip hop, funk and soul acts should ensure that things dont get too sleepy). As the Essential Festival grows bigger, its attracted a wider, cross-generational audience, and disabled facilities, such as viewing platforms and toilets are promised. Obviously, theres still lots of students...
DONT MISS:
Phew! Both days feature such a weighty line-up, that theyre positively studded with highlights, from Brighton big beat boy Fatboy Slim to James Brown (whose live sets are positively surreal these days). A very special guest is promised for the main stage on Saturday, otherwise look out for the multimedia delights of the Experiments In Sound Arena, plus local club nights the Big Beat Boutique and Legends Of The Dark Black. On Sunday, be sure to catch the supremely funky Angie Stone, Essential favourite Lee Scratch Perry, and awesome beatbox vocalist Rahzel.
HANDY HINTS:
As theres no on-site camping, its worth trying to arrange nearby accomodation (if only so you get to spend more time in summery
