Its almost become a cliche to say that theres no festival like Glastonbury, but anyone who goes soon understands. This year 100,000 people will head to Worthy Farm, 30 years after the original festival, and theyll find an event thats as much about sitting in a field as it is about watching top bands. When people say they go to Glastonbury and dont see a single band, theyre not lying. As organiser Michael Eavis told us, Theres so much else going on other than just music.
ATMOSPHERE:
With a sprawls over 800 acres of Somerset countryside, you can be as involved or uninvolved as you like at Glastonbury. Chill in the healing fields, or get sweaty in the dance tent. The choice is yours. But if you go with a see-what-happens attitude and an open mind, you wont go far wrong.
DON'T MISS:
Weve increased the dance music, because theres such a huge demand for it now, says Eavis of The Glade, an all-new, open-air dance stage in the trees. Weve got all sorts of people that wanna play there, but we cant say who they are cos theyre not charging us much and theyre all top people So were making up names for them to disguise who they are. Not even the record companies know theyre playing. Also worth looking out for is the new ballroom dancing area, being run by Roy, an ex-hippy convoy leader, underneath the railway line. And for children or drum n bass historians, check out the excellent kids area where, according to Eavis, Roni Size formed his group. He was teaching kids music on the Bristol Community Bus and in the evenings they all got together and he actually started his band here.
HANDY HINTS:
Eavis says you should look around the edges of the festival for surprises. Last year I amazed myself. I was walking around, saw a hole in the ground and they said hey Mike come down here! So I went down and it was all lit up with candles and there was a chap playing a grand piano. There was tiered seating. It was terrific, all done undergound! I mean it couldnt have been safe down there, but I didnt know anything about it!
TICKETS:
Tickets cost £87 (plus £2 handling charge) including camping, parking and a programme upon arrival. Accompanied children under 14 are admitted free. Caravans and living vehicles require a seperate advance ticket (£25).
