Born in the 60s as the National Jazz And Blues Festival, Reading was resurrected by Mean Fiddler in the late 80s, and last year officially became the Carling Weekend, its line-up alternating with a twin festival in Leeds (in a similar style to V2000). It continues as an indie rock institution, with brief forays into dance styles and metal.
ATMOSPHERE:
A festival with rawk in its heart, Reading is raucous and lively, and whereas the site is far from picturesque, at least its easy to negotiate your way around the various stages. As night falls, and the temperature drops, make sure you dont fall into one of the many makeshift campfires constructed from soggy packaging, polysterene cups and other potentially poisonous materials.
DONT MISS:
The co-headline performances from Pulp and Beck (Sat Reading) should make for a thrillingly theatrical offbeat indie contrast with the more standard rock headliners Stereophonics and Oasis (wholl be setting out to prove that they really havent lost their fire, man). Readings traditionally the place for controversial sets (remember the Prodigy/Beastie Boys feud a few years back?); this year, mask-clad metal monsters Slipknot should kick up a shambolic storm, and rap anti-hero Eminem certainly wont be keeping things clean. If youre looking for non-musical distractions, theres a comedy tent promising stand-up and film screenings.
HANDY HINTS:
Although the site can get pretty darned muddy, Readings an urban festival - so you can take advantage of the town centre shops, cash points etc, all within easy walking distance. Mobile phone users should take note that Orange is the sole telecommunications supplier at these festivals.
TICKETS:
Weekend tickets cost £80 including camping. Day tickets (no camping) cost £33. Tickets can be purchased for face value at all Mean Fiddler venues.
By post: Weekend tickets are £80.50 each (including booking fee); add £3.50 to cover registered post on orders of 4 or more. Cheques payable to Reading Festival Ltd should be sent to Reading or Leeds 2000, PO Box 1707, London NW10 4LW.
